Legend of Bruce Lee Volume One

Bruce Lee, what’s not to love.  The world fell in love with him, and martial arts in general when he burst on the scene as Kato in the short lived Green Hornet TV series.  Enter The Dragon is well regarded as the best martial arts films of all time.  Bruce Lee became an icon that to this day, years after his passing is still honored and beloved worldwide.

In China back in 2008 a Television series documenting his life began airing.  It lasted a total of 50 episodes and starred Danny Chan as Bruce Lee.  Countless martial arts stars appeared through the series run, Mark Dacascos, Ray Park, Gary Daniels, Ernest Miller, even Michael Jai White have all popped up.

We learn how Bruce began studying martial arts at a young age and used his skills to protect the neighborhood business from gangsters.  After an attempt on his life he falls into a coma and when he awakens his parent send him to America where he goes to college and eventually challenges the school Karate Team to a fight against his Kung Fu skills. And what skills they are.  Everything the Danny Chan does during these fights just flows and comes to life better than anything I have seen in years.
Is it true?  Who
knows, I mean sure its “Documented” but I have read lots of conflicting reports.  Is it fun?  In a word, YES.  This is a fantastic set.  The fight scenes are simply amazing.  Movie quality to say the least.  And let’s face it that why you buy things like this, for the fight scenes.

Lionsgate had acquired the rights to this year’s back and edited the series down into a 183min movie, that although decent was in no way up to par with this set.  Well Go USA has acquired the rights and are releasing it in Volumes.  Volume 1 is a 3 disc set containing the first 10 episode.  And it is an amazing set to say the least.  It clocks in at a little over 7 hours.  As of this writing I probably have about 5 invested.

If your like everyone else and are a fan of Bruce Lee, or a fan of martial arts films.  Hurry and pick this up.  Like I said the fight scenes are some of the best I have ever seen you won’t be disappointed.

The Trail of Dracula

A little while ago I was asked if I would like to receive The Trail of Dracula to review.  I responded that I would love to receive “The Trial of Dracula” to which my friend replied “It’s trail, if it was a trial he would lose”

Now I just want to say that judging by the amount of vampires I saw on Halloween the other night, and the amount of vampire films to come out recently I think he could get off on a hung jury or possible mistrial, or trail if you will.

That being said when Halloween lights off and my son went to bed I decided to throw Trial of Dracula on as I’ve always enjoyed the character and I was in the mood for horror, but not a horror movie.

Trail of Dracula is a short documentary.  It clocks about 1 hour and tells the history of Count Dracula.  It actually goes further back beyond the legend of Vlad the Impailer, the character Count Dracula is based off of. You learn about Nosferatu, who I always found rather lame and of course you delve into Bram Strokers classic novel.

As I always hated the book, and the big budget film that came out I was not overly excited to say the least.  In fact I was a bit bored as even though I love Vampire movies the lore dating back is not really a fascinating subject to me.  Luckily the director realized this and the second act of the doc really picks up for us fans who are only about horror.

We get to explore the history of Dracula in film.  From Bela Lugosi, to Christopher lee its all explored.  Universal clips, which are my favorites as my son and I are both huge Universal Monster fans to the hammer Films from England, which are loved and admired by most all the horror population.
One of the cool things is learning a bit about the film Satanic Rites of Dracula, which I recently reviewed and hearing about the last Hammer Dracula film.  We also get to hear Werner Herzog discuss his Nosferatu, Udo Keir discussed Blood for Dracula, and of course audio of Christopher Lee discussing his love of Dracula.

Now if you’re a Dracula movie fan get ready for this.  There are 43, yes 43 different trailers for Dracula films from all over the world on here.  That’s over 90min of Dracula Trail Goodness.  That alone if enough reason to buy.  And I have to say the video quality on this disc is very good considering they had to mix many types of footage together.

If you like Dracula, or Vampires, or if you are just a fan of horror films then there is something on here for everyone.  A detailed documentary and a plethora of trailers.  Sadly though I did not see a trailer for “Trial of Dracula” so I think I may have to start production on that one.

Nightmare Sisters

Ok first off I am going to admit I have never seen Nightmare Sisters before.  I have heard of it, and of course I am familiar with the girls, primarily Linnea Quigley, the best straight to video scream queen of all time in my opinion. So when I heard the fine folks over at Vinegar Syndrome were going to be releasing this I knew it was something I had to see.

Nightmare Sisters is the story of 3 nerd girls.  Played by Quigley, Brinke Stevens, and Michelle Bauer.  There homely, can’t get dates, have no real life, nothing really going for them.  Desperate they decide to throw a party and invite some nerd guys.  Seems like a good plan.

The party is basically like the Lambda’s party in Revenge of the Nerds until Booger pulled out the wonder joints.  These girls don’t have those so they pull out a magic crystal ball and decide to liven things up by having a séance. Problem being the crystal ball is cursed and the 3 become possessed by a succubus.

Now this, at least for the audience is not a bad thing.  Se the girls suddenly become hot, they even take a nice long bath together to get ready to go out and kill there nerd dates as well as some of the nerds horney frat brothers. Lots of nice little gore shots and an ample amount of nudity and hilarity ensues as all the guys have to fight not only there primal urges but the fact they will be murdered by 3 hot chicks.

This film is the epitome of low budget.  It was shot over 4 days’ time with the cast and crew of Sorority Babes in the Slime Ball Bowl A Rama.  It was all filmed in the producers house and the cast basically wore their own cloths and did their own make up.  It had a budget of 40,000.00 which is low even by 80’s straight to video horror.  However this was the market the film was intended for.

Unfortunately things did not go as planned and the distributor went bankrupt.  I believe less than 2,000 tapes were ever sent out.  Apparently though USA Up All Night showed the film once minus the bathtub scene but I have never come across that airing.  Fortunately the 3 girls, especially Linnea Quigley became quite popular in the horror market.  Some of the scenes from this were actually inserted into her workout tape she put out years back.

The notoriety caused the film to slowly grow a large cult following.  A DVD was issued years back with a commentary track, but the screenshots I saw looked pretty poor.  That however changed when Vinegar Syndrome decided to do this new transfer.  Everything about this looks fantastic.  The lighting, the sound, the nudity, they all come to life in this gorgeous Blu-ray.  As its Vinegar it has an ample amount of special features as well.

Scanned, restored & preserved in 2k from 35mm original camera negative
Commentary track with director David DeCoteau & actress Linnea Quigley
Director introduction

Fans of 80s films especially those of the straight to video horror market should definitely pick this one up and add it to your collection.  It’s a lot of fun and I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Vampyres

Back in the 70’s Vampire films became pretty much a go to for directors.  Countless films were made dealing with the creatures of the night.  Both in normal horror films, to grindhouse style, to even a more adult tone so to speak.  The most notorious of the bunch was a film made in 1974 called simply Vampyres.  Vampyres was the story of 2 lesbian vampire lovers.  That’s it, nothing more nothing less.  It was a great little film for its time especially since there was really nothing out there to compare it to.  Well now we flash forward to 2016 and low and behold the film has been remade.

Also titled Vampyers this new version ups the ante on everything, sex, gore, blood, nudity, you name it.

It’s a very simple story.  2 gorgeous vampire girls live together in a little remote cabin and have sex with each other.  They feed by luring campers, and wandering travelers back to their cabin and killing them.  Sometimes, well more often than not they have sex with them as well before they kill them.  I guess if a vampire is going to get you that’s a good way to go.  There were times you almost had to think the guy was lucky.  Well more so for the beginning part, not the death that inevitably awaited him

One day an entire group of campers set up there shelter right by the vampire girls cabin.  Basically you should be able to get the rest.  Campers are enticed, hell more like attracted to go back to the cabin where they are sexually killed off one by one.

If you are into gore than I have to say this is a bloodbath.  In one scene the 2 ladies are taking a bath in blood courtesy of the body with the slit throat above them pouring out the liquid all over them.  Also, yes, they are naked.  The film, like most any type like this starts off slowly.  In fact the beginning is basically just a showcase of the 2 girls showing off there hotness so to speak. The final act picks up a lot of steam however and becomes a frantically paced gore show.

Yes if you’re wondering the lady’s look fantastic.  They really do, there acting is actually very good and they have good chemistry together.  The acting on the majority of the campers who show up is not very good.  In fact the lack of chemistry between them leave you with basically no sympathy for them.  I rooted for the 2 vampire girls during the entire film

The DVD looks great.  All the colors are crisp and the sound is excellent.  Artsploitation did a fantastic job on this transfer.    They have been putting out a slew of fantastic films and this one is no exception.  If you’re a fan of vampires, horror, gore, nudity, then this is right up your alley.

Nurse Diary: Beast Afternoon

So.....I've never actually reviewed a film like this. Sure I've seen weird films and a few erotic films (not really my thing) but I don't think I've ever watched a hybrid of the 2 that was this bat shit insane. But I'm going to give it a try.

Nurse Diaries:Beast Afternoon is the story of a young girl named Reiko get and get boyfriend get stuck together having sex so of course they go a doctor who decides to keep her for treatment after discovering she suffers from "Genophobia" which is the fear of sexual intercourse.

See he has inventing a Dream Ring that when inserted into a woman's vagina it recorders her dreams which all seem to be erotic for some reason. Only problem with this is the Dr is insane. He uses the ring to hypnotize Reiko and has her begin committing murders.

The movie looks really cool I won't lie its like if Ed Wood and Tim Burton somehow had a bizarre love child and he came up with this. The visuals are great. It has more of a thriller vibe than sleazy grindhouse tone which makes it flow a lot better.

The transfer looked goo and while doing a bit of research I found this is actually part of a series. I do plan on seeking at least another one out to see how it intertwines with this.

If you like films like this than this is right up your alley if your like me and have never seen something this odd I would say check it out. If anything you can at least describe it to you friends while, they stare at you in disbelieve

The Initiation

I used to watch Melrose Place religiously.  I have no shame admitting that, hell everyone watched it.  I always thought the Daphne Zuniga was gorgeous.  Before Melrose she had made a handful of films.  Space balls being the most well know of the bunch.  Her first starring role however was a small little film from 1984 called The Initiation from New World Pictures.

It’s a really well made film that sadly got overshadowed as it opened around the same time as the original Nightmare on Elm Street.  Its had a few DVD and VHR releases over the years, and has managed to gain a nice cult following.  The fine folks over at Arrow Video took notice of this and have released it for the first time on a beautiful transfer Blu-ray.

Initiation is the story of Kelly Fairchild (played by Zuniga) she suffers from recurring dreams of a man burring to death in the home she grew up in.  Also she is pledging a sorority in which her initiation ritual will be breaking into her dad’s department store with the other pledges. It always made me wonder, if her dad did not own a big store what would they have done for an initiation?  Anyway well the girls are preparing to do this we find out that there is a looney bin a few miles away where an escape has just occurred.  We know all this because they call Kelly’s parents to tell them.

That night the girls and a few of their boyfriends break into the store as planned and strange things start happening.  Well not really strange, more like murder.  See there is a killer on the loose, remember the breakout of the sanitarium?  As this is all happening Kelly’s graduate Assistant Peter, who has been helping Kelly with her term paper detailing her dream, and partial amnesia she suffered has found out who the man in her dreams is.  I would tell you more but that would ruin it.  I can promise you, if you have never seen it, it has a great ending.

The film is very good.  Well made, well-acted, and perfectly paced.  Lots of great FX including death by harpoon, elevator, roof fall, stabbing, you name it.  Over in the UK almost a full minute of just gore shots had to be cut for the film to pass the ratings board.  It truly is one of the great horror films from that era in my opinion.

The lighting, which I always deem to be very important in films like this is spot on with a nice score in the back to set the tone.  As I said this is an Arrow Blu-ray so nothing but the best in terms of transfer.  Spot on picture and sound that pumps through your speakers, further adding to the tension of the story of the girls trapped in the store with a maniac.  Also as it is Arrow that has put this out its full of special features

Brand new restoration from original film elements
 High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentation
 Original Uncompressed Mono PCM audio
Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
Brand new audio commentary by The Hysteria Continues
Brand new interview with actor Christopher Bradley
Brand new interview with actress Joy Jones
 Original Theatrical Trailer
Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Justin Osbourn

FIRST PRESSING ONLY: Collector s booklet featuring new writing on the film by critic James Oliver

All that being said this is a must own for any horror fan, especially those fond of 80's films.  Its an overlooked gem that needs to be seen

Hobgoblins

So when the film being reviewed is best known for being an episode of not only Mystery Science Theater but Elvira in her new 13 Nights of Elvira show you would think one of 2 things.  How bad is this, or how horribly good is this.  Well considering it was the film’s director, Rick Sloane who submitted the film it leans a bit more towards the latter. In fact it is Rick Sloane who first embraced the disaster that was this film.

Hobgoblins is a Gremlins rip off, sort of.  I can’t really say it’s a spoof as the humor is pretty unintentional that I can tell.  It’s the story of Kevin, a night security guard at a film studio and his group of weird sex crazed friends.  One night when Kevin is on patrol he comes across an old vault that contains a couple of weird looking puppet like creatures.  They escape and we soon learn they are aliens who have the power to makes ones fantasy’s come true.  Bad thing about that is at the end you fantasy turns on you and you die.  There Hobgoblins and they have been at the studio locked in the vault for years.

Once the break out the head straight for Kevin’s house, yes I still wonder how they found it and he must team up with his friends to battle them.  Its full of cheesy gore shots and silly sleaze scenes, like when Kevin’s Girlfriend Amy’s fantasy turns out to be an easy stripper.   The humor is juvenile to say the least, but its ok it fits.

I can’t say the film has good acting, it doesn’t, it doesn’t have a good soundtrack, it doesn’t have good effects, in fact nothing about this is good.  That being said it’s a great and fun film to watch.  And I’m not the only one.  The following for this is so huge a sequel was made years later in 2009.
See what makes this great is the complete mess it is.  Remember this was an 80s film so excess was the key.  Go back and watch an serious 80s film, you will find something to laugh at.  Watch this and its funnier than Airplane.  It really is.  And I give Rick Sloane all the credit in the world for promoting it being bad.  Heck its considered one of the worst films ever made, but when you start to google it, it pops right up.  Fan sites and all.  I watched the Blu-ray last night with my wife and we had a great time.  We weren’t making fun of the film, we just watched it and laughed.  It was one of the more entertaining films we have watched together in a while.  The whole so bad its good theory really is true to the point with this one.

It had a few releases over the years on VHS and even on a Mystery Science Theater DVD set.  Well now Vinegar Syndrome has picked it up and released a fantastic Blu-ray edition with special features.

Deathrow Gameshow

Remember the glory days of trash tv.  Geraldo, Morton Downey, even Donahue were all in on it.  They it was taken to a whole new level with The Jerry Springer Show, a show so staged it makes WWE look real. Well all the way back in 1987 a little known film came out called Death Row Game Show.  Which was a game show trash tv satire, that when you really think about it was well ahead of its time.  It featured a tagline of “Chuck Toedan want you to Die…..Laughing!”

To call this a film would not really be accurate.  Its more of a series of sketches that are intertwined.  That’s not a bad thing it fits the format that is laid out.  It centers around the game show called Live or Die.  The premise of this show is Death Row Prisoners get a chance to compete and win prizes, sometimes for their family and provide entertainment before being killed on camera. For instance if a prisoner who is about to die via Guillotine has his head land face up his family wins a nice cash prize.  The show is high rated and even though it has lines of protesters who constantly harass host Chuck Toedan its high rated.

Unfortunately one day one of the contestants end up being the head of the Spumoni crime family.  His death does not bode will with the rest of the family and they hire the best hit man in the world, Beano Agundez to take out Chuck Toedan.  He has no problems taking this hit as his mother once wandered onto the set of the game show in a striped shirt and was forced to play and be killed as he shirt had everyone convinced she was a prisoner.

As all this is happening we also meet Gloria a spokesman for the group “Woman Against Anything Men Are For!” she disapproves of the show and confronts him on a daytime talk show discussing it.  She goes to his office for a meeting just as Bean Agundez shows up to whack Toedan.

I love this film, always have always will.  Like I said it’s a series of skits which work as its set in the realm of television.  Its considered a horror film due to the general content, and the fact people are being killed for entertainment, but its very much a wacky comedy in my opinion.  It has slapstick humor very reminiscent of a Zucker Brother film.  The murders are all over the top hysterical, even the announcer who talks before the killings, always says something very un-pc yet hysterical non the less.

The acting is good, as are all the practical effects.  As it is paced out like a sketch show it moves along at a breathtaking pace never once slowing down.  Everything hits you and you only get a few seconds before the next cut.  If you had cable tv in the 80s this played from time to time late at night.  It had an old VHS release but now the negative found its way into the hands of the fine folks a Vinegar Syndrome.  And as you can imagine it looks great.

A brand new 2K transfer and cleaned up audio make this a pleasure to watch.  Every scene comes to life and the executions and crowd noises flow perfectly out of your speakers. And as Vinegar Syndrome never skimps on the extras you get a ton of extras

Killbillies

In the realm of horror pictures you need something to grab the audiences eye.  A really cover picture on the cover of your DVD and or a cool name.  This film actually has both.  Presented by Artsploitation Films, Killbillies has an ear catching name and an eye popping cover featuring a big nasty deformed hillbilly holding a giant blade.  Just looking at this made me know I was in for a treat, and seeing as how I was home sick anyway I threw it right on and was treated to a great time. Better yet I was going to watch the first horror film to come out of Slovania.

It’s the story of a group of very annoying models.  We first meet them in an overly long opening sequence in a bar where we get to see that they are not the type of girls to be messed with after one has an altercation with a drunk pervert in the bathroom.  Cut to the next morning and there off to the county for a photo shoot.  In a scene really out of nowhere they stop when they see a weird kid playing an accordion siting with a woman.  The models stop and ask if they can buy some booze from them?!!  Anyway they set up there equipment and right away you get the feeling that they are being watched.

Turns out they are, by the Killbillies.  2 grotesque looking large men who run down to the shoot, because its on their land.  They grab the cameraman and the girls and when we next see them they are locked up in a giant shed.  It’s there that the Killbillies begin there killing.  Smashing ones head to a bloody pulp on a wall, knives to the throat, axes, you name it.  It all leads to the inevitable climax in the woods after some of the women make an escape.

The film is fun.  However I must state is a foreign release so you will have to read the subtitles.  Don’t worry though its not overly complicated Quinten Tarentino dialogue your reading here.  With that said it plays out like a grand throw back to 80’s shot to video films.  Don’t get me wrong it does not look cheap, in fact some of the practical effect are really well done.  But it has that look and feel of and old school horror film that I love.  The claustrophobic scenes when the models are captured to the frantic paced scenes in the woods.  I really enjoyed the cinematography as it kind of that’s you back to those old 35mm Drive-In Movie days.  The acting was very well done as well.  The Killbillies come off as creepy and nasty as they need to too and the girls all play their parts to perfection.

The pictures looks really good despite being a dvd.  I would go as far as to say it looks better than a few Blu-rays I have seen lately.  The sound is perfect and the subtitles pop out perfectly.  That is a big mark of respect for me as so many films have washed out sub titles, or they use the wrong color so you miss some of the words on outside scenes.  Not here. They are presented dead in the center with breaks between characters and all.

The Killbillies look great, deformed perverted mangled up hillbilly killing machines match that with the fact they are going after attractive models and you have a definite winner on your hands here.  I would recommend picking this one up.

Overall 3 out of 5 stars

Burial Ground

Too be honest I shouldn’t have to write but a few words to not only convince you this film is good, but that you should run out and buy it now.  Those words are “Zombie Breast Feeding Scene!”  yes you read that correctly.  I must say that is not something you see in many films, actually in any the more I think about it.

Burial Ground aka Zombie 3 aka Nights of Terror aka The Zombie Dead is a combination zombie exploitation film from Italy.  It gained some notoriety back in the 80s when it was released on VHS and received 13min of cuts in the UK and was branded a “Video Nasty”  I can see that brand, not only for Zombie Breast feeding, but nudity, extreme gore, violence, sexuality, incest, you name it.  As this is 2016 and some of it is shocking image watching it in the 80’s

Burial Ground is the story of a scientist who was experimenting with an old crypt beneath his mansion.  During his studies he ends up unleashing a curse causing all the corpses to reanimate.  After they dispatch of him they begin rising up and turning their attention on the 3 couples he has invited to stay at his mansion.  They all fit the ear, swingers, young frisky couples so to speak.  One of them, a very attractive mother has a creepy son, that I could not tell if his was mentally challenged, or just a mommas boy.  What’s really creepy is he reminds me of someone my wife knows.  They walk around the mansion having sex, taking pictures and making out outside until all the zombies start rising up from the ground.

Now even though they move slow they are not the typical film zombie.  They use items to break open doors, and weapons on occasion to kill the couples in very graphic ways.  Everyone decides to take shelter inside, downstairs in a very Night of the Living Dead style hideout when the huge zombie siege begins.

The zombies look slightly dated when compared to today's, but these are all old school practical effects, and they still hold up well to this day.  The kills scenes are also all done in practical make up and work very effectively.  The kill to the maid by scythe and the smashing of one’s head stand out the most to me.

Severin Films has done an outstanding job scanning the original 35mm print on this film to 2K.  The audio and video quality are outstanding especially considering the obscurity of this film as of late.  It’s got a nice amount of extras as well.

Villa Parisi - Legacy of Terror: Featurette on the historic house location
Peter Still Lives: Festival Q&A with actor Peter Bark
Just for the Money: Interview with actor Simone Mattioli
The Smell Of Death: Interviews with Producer Gabriele Crisanti and Actress Mariangela Giordano
Deleted/ Extended Scenes/ Shots
Theatrical Trailer

The film still packs quiet the punch and for those who have never seen it is well worth a watch.  If you’re a fan and own one of the DVD release from years back do yourself a favor and pick up this Blu-ray edition

Lights Out

I won’t lie, I was a little skeptical putting this film in last night.  I love James Wan but he was only the producer.  Ghost stories, as everyone here knows are not really my favorite type of film.  My wife however loves them, so sometimes it’s entertaining to watch her jump and scream.  So after my son went to bed I popped in Lights Out and sure enough about 2min in my wife screamed and jumped.  Sadly this woke up my son so we had a nice 10min wait until we could resume.  Finally when he fell back to sleep we turned it back on and I began watching my wife get nervous. With every flicker of screen.

Lights out is the story of a family.  Older Daughter Rebecca (Theresa Palmer) young son Martin (Gabriel Bateman) and mother Sophie (Maria Bello)  Rebecca lives above a tattoo parlor having moved out years back to get away from her mother.  She is called on day by the school councilor about her little brother falling asleep in class.  The school could not reach his mom who has been experiencing severe depression and manic tendency’s due to the death of her husband. To make things even worse she has stopped taking her meds which is not good as her late husband was becoming so worried that he was thinking of having her put away to get help.  Rebecca takes Martin home and when she asks how mom is he tells her she keeps talking to “Diana”.  This triggers something in Rebecca who tells her mom she is taking Martin to her apartment until her mom gets back on her meds.

“Diana”, without giving to much away is the name for the evil ghost creature that only appears in darkness.  She is mostly viewed as a Silhouette but the shots you see her are in fact very creepy.  She drags her feet almost like a zombie but moves at a breakneck pace.  Quick fast shots of her face when the lights appear are quite ghastly.  She made my wife jump more than once.  ‘Diana” first appeared when Rebecca was a girl so she knows all too well what her brother is going through.

Throughout the film we learn the origin of Diana, her connection with the family, and what makes her evil.  I won’t give any of that away but I will say I enjoyed the back story tremendously.  It was, not a shocker by any means, but it was different than the typical ghostly attachment story we have all seen before.  Its due to this, and the strong performance of the cast, in particular Maria Bello and Gabriel Bateman as the mom and young son that the film not only holds your interest but allows you to make a connection with these characters. That, and the fact the final act is out of this world in terms of intensity will have you hooked.

Even though James Wan was only one of the producers you can definitely see his involvement with the film.  The dark, yet at the same time bright colors with every shot, the tight cut scenes and pacing are all used by Wan in his films.  The interesting thing is Wan, who loved director David Sandberg’s short film was not convinced that it could translate into a full length film. But Sandberg was able to do it, and on a rather modest budget of 4.9 million dollars.  The film ended up grossing 148 million worldwide so it was a box office hit.

The Blu-ray looks great crisp colors great frame rate and fantastic audio which is nothing new for Warner Brothers, as they have Blu-ray specs down to a science.  The film itself clocks in just a little over 90min, but seems to fly right by.

Overall I would have to give this a high recommendation.  As I have stated countless times I am not a big fan of films like this as I feel they are all about the same, but the few new twists, the great cast, and the fantastic creepy Diana made this a highly enjoyable film.  I won’t lie, it made me jump twice.  My wife on the other hand was truly terrified by the end and now needs a touch up on her hair as some of it is now grey.

Special Effects

Larry Cohen is a name film lovers know very well.  Q: The Winged Serpent, and The Stuff being 2 of the more prolific of the 80s.  Very B style and campy.  I liked both of those films, I liked one he did in the 90’s called Ambulance as well.  Turns out in 1984 he made a lesser known one, to me anyways titled Special Effects which was a far different cry than the others I have mentioned.

Special Effects is a very dark satire on the film industry according to some.  I find it more like a standard sleazy exploitation film.  Nothing wrong with that, just a bit weird as it has a fair amount of comedy sprinkled in.  Its about a small town hick named Keef.  He’s from the great Sooner state of Oklahoma but he heads out to NY to find his wife Mary, who left for NY to become an actress.

He finds her, but instead of doing movies she is just doing nude porno shoots.  She tells him she doesn’t want to come back with him as she is going to be the star in the new Christopher Neville film.
Well turns out Neville has just been let go from the project as he keeps going over budget on his special effect and his last few films have bombed at the box office.  He doesn’t tell Mary that and tricks her into sleeping with him.  She finds out however that he is videotaping them and gets infuriated, insulting him and his films.  He flips out and kills her, then dumps the body.

When the cops find her Keef of course becomes the main suspect and is arrested.  Luckily for him Neville bails him out and tells him that he wants to make a film all about Mary and that Keef is going to play himself in the film.  I mean why not he already has her death filmed for the ending.  Keef doesn’t want to but Neville says he will pull the bail and have him arrested.  He even makes Keef reenact scenes depicting their failing marriage.

This film, although a work of fiction borrows a lot of elements from Star 80.  Granted Star 80 was a sad true story but the whole make it famous tragic murder plays into both films.  Keep in mind this is just my opinion.  If you dig Cohen’s work this is worth checking out because of the difference in tone and style.  Like I said the others films he’s best known for are campy B films.  This plays out like a sleazy, dirty, exploitation mystery.  That’s not a bad thing, in fact it’s a nice change from a lot of current films I have seen.

Olive Films has just released this on Blu Ray and the transfer looks great.  It has the sleazy feel, but the colors used really stand out.  The new cover art looks great, as the old dvd version had just a photo of Mary on it.  This gives it more of a Horror/Art House look to it.  It’s a great film with a nice amount of twists and turns that is well worth checking out.

Miami Vice: The Complete Series

Ok full disclosure here.  Until last night I had never seen an episode of Miami Vice.  Sure I was familiar with it.  Hell to this day I appreciate the fact that 5 o’clock shadows were made popular by it as I hate shaving. Now before you judge me keep in mind I was a little kid, so a crime drama was not really my thing.  I always saw the commercials, the ads, heck I remember all the soundtrack albums that came out to go along with it but I never saw the show.  So last night I decided to pop in the Miami Vice complete series blue ray set, and once again I must thank insomnia because I ended up watching about 5 episodes.

For the few out there like me who have never watched it, it centers around 2 Miami Vice cops named Crockett and Tubbs.  They masquerade as drug dealers, who run the product off of Crockett’s cigarette boat.  I dig the fact that the cigarette boat back them was an amazing speedboat whereas now they are everywhere.  Crockett, played by Don Johnson lives on a boat that is guarded by his pet alligator.  They set up scores as buyers and sellers to bust drug dealers.  Its all set to the gorgeous back drop of Miami in the 80s, which in all honesty is where allot of trafficking took place. Most of these meetings take place in the hot clubs or on the beach.

The 1st episode is the 2hr pilot showing how they meet, become friends and team up.  We get introduced to the captain, the other cops, Crockets soon to be ex-wife, even his pet alligator.  After that the episodes I watched featured a lot of the same plot.  In part 2 they were after a crocked FBI officer, they went after an arms dealer (played by Bruce Willis), a racketeer, and of course more drug dealers.  Even the main drug Dealer from the 1st episode returns.  Even though things are referenced this was before the era of linear television, so if you miss an episode here or there you were ok as they were self-contained for the most part.

One thing that stuck out was how the show looked.  It was like Neon Film Noire. Everything was bright, paisley, shark skin, pink, peach, white, blue, every color of the rainbow.  If there wasn’t a synth score playing in the background it was usually pop music from the biggest bands in the 80’s  Everyone looked cool, acted cool, and dressed like they were going to a high rollers club.  In essence the show looked really slick.  Now I am saying it looked slick in 2016, I can see why it was considered so cutting edge back in its day.  I give props for these Blu Rays keeping the original music.  When 21 Jump Street came out a few years back on home video they could not get music rights and the episodes lost something because of it.

The presentation on this set is flawless.  Great picture quality, which considering the majority takes place outside is great as usually outside shots are hard to fully clean up.  The sound is excellent and blasts through the speakers.  Sometimes its too good as I had to keep turning down the score only scenes then turning it back up for the talking scenes.  I like once again how it’s a nice standard blu ray case inside a standard cardboard slip cover case.  Sometimes cheap packaging can ruin these sets, but Mill Creek did a great job on this one as well.

If you, like 90% of the population are a fan then this is a must own set.  If you have never seen it before like myself and the other 10% of us I recommend picking this one up.  These are full shows not the edited syndication versions and they have the original music.  It’s a great throwback to the loud colorful world of the 80’s, a decade that I wish would come back because after watching 5 hours of this I feel the need to go and buy a white pair of pants and a peach colored jacket.  It would work, as I haven’t shaved in 3 days anyway.

Knight Rider: The Complete Series

Insomnia, people that have it always complain, and bitch, and moan.  I have it.  Sure I need extra coffee in the morning but it provides me with extra TV time.  After my wife and son are fast asleep I simply go downstairs, turn on the tv and watch movies or old tv shows.  Right now I am grateful for not only the insomnia but for Mill Creek for putting out my favorite show as a kid, Knight Rider.  Now the insomnia has really paid off as I can relive all of the Hoff’s great moments.

For those of you to young, or that lived in a cave during the 80s.  Knight Rider was the coolest show on tv.  It stared David Hasselhoff as Michael Long , a police officer who is shot in the face.  He is given plastic surgery and a new identity as Michael Knight.  The man who did this for him is Wilton Knight a billionaire who is starting his own law enforcement division.  He recruits Michael to lead this and gives him KITT, the Knight Industries Two Thousand.  It’s a computerized Pontiac Firebird.  Its bullet proof, has weapons, talks, has artificial intelligence, everything a nerd would want in a super car.

I could not wait for Sunday Night when I was little.  No matter what I was doing I had to be home, changed into my pajamas in my room and ready to watch Knight Rider.  Even as a little kid I knew the Hoff was James Dean cool.

Every show something bad happens and Michael and KITT drive in and save the day and get the girl.  In season 2 we meet Goliath, which is an evil semi-truck made out of KITTS special metal shell.  The guy driving it is played by David Hasselhoff in a cool duel role.  He plays Garth Knight, William Knight’s evil estranged son.  I watched that one last night as well.  I always remembered being really worried when Goliath smashed up KITT, but its ok, because KITT got re modded and came back even cooler than before.

I watched about 7 episodes total last night scanning a bit of each disc. And I must say Mill Creek did a great job with this blue ray set.  Its packed in a nice slip box and each season is individually packed in standard blu ray cases. Which alone makes it worthwhile as some TV sets lately have really skimped on the packaging aspect buy using the cheap plastic shells in a big box.  These are actual blu ray cases.  The picture quality is fantastic as is the sound.  If my son would not have been asleep my sound bar would have been blasting the amazing opening theme.  In fact when he woke up it did.

Now I know there are lots of people out there who will argue that the show is lame by today’s standards but I disagree.  I found that after spending my night watching it that it hold up really well.  If you were a fan of the series from back in the day this is definitely a must own set,  I’ve watched random episodes in syndication when they pop up but the quality is bad.  I really can’t stress how amazing this one looks, even the flashing back and forth red visor when KITT talks just glows on the screen.  The car chases come to life with not only the picture but the sound as well.

Another thing is that this not only a show that holds up over time for you to still be able to enjoy, but it also is a good one to watch with your kids.  When I explained to my 7yr old about the computerized car his first question was “Does it talk”  when I replied yes, his next question was “Can I watch it?” to which I also replied yes.

Mill Creek is known for putting out amazingly large tv series set and this is no exception.  It’s all 4 seasons, on 16 blu rays.  If you loved it growing up buy it, show it to your kids and let them experience the joy that you don’t really get in modern day television.  I’ve always said Baywatch would have been much better had Hasselhoff rode around in a talking dune buggy.  Sadly he did not, but he did in Knight Rider, except it wasn’t a dune buggy, but we covered that.

Bottom line this is a must own.  And remember titles like this tend to go out of print so I would pick this up now and start reliving this great show from the 80s

Little Fauss and Big Halsy

I dig Biker Film, they were a nice piece of the exploitation genre that sadly went away too soon.  They were usually the variation of two types of plot.  Bikers must fight someone, or rival bikers fight each other.  Sometimes you got a cool twist where the bikers were monsters.

Well in the case of this film Little Fauss and Big Halsy you get more of a character drama set against the racing circuit.  It stars Robert Redford in one of his lesser know roles.  Over the years however it has developed a pretty big cult following.  Google Little Fa and it pops up before you finish typing out Fauss. Well the kind folks over at Olive Pictures are releasing this for the first time ever on Blue Ray on October 18th.  And I must say the quality is out of this world stunning for a lost film of the 70's

Its the story of the hard drinking womanizing Big Halsy, played to perfection by Robert Redford.  See Halsy has been banned from the pro racing circuit for his drunken antics and hot temper.  Its at a small amateur race he meets Little Fauss.  A young naive rider who starts to idolize the way Halsy lives his life. His parents hate Halsy and think he's a bad influence, what with him being a drunk jerk.  But they strike up a friendship non the less.

Now as Halsy cant compete he has the idea of racing but using Fauss's name, and Fauss will help him by being his mechanic. The plan works except for the fact that Halsy treat Fauss like dirt.  It doesn't help when a woman named Rita Nebraska shows up who they both are attracted to.  Needless to say you can pretty much guess where it goes from here, as the fragile friendship they have is torn apart when she chooses to be with Big Halsy

Of course this all cumulates with a big race at the end in which the two go head to head.  Sure there are things that happen before this but if I told you everything there would be no reason to watch, and you really should
.

I'm not a huge Redford fan but man doe he scream James Dean cool in this film.  He plays the troubled care free smooth talking Halsy to perfection.  The whole cast is good but its all Redford's film.  He chews every scene to perfection, and shows why he has been an active player in Hollywood all these years.

I really have to put Olive Films over again for this fantastic transfer.  The outside scenes all pop with little to no grain visible.  Sound quality is outstanding as the race scenes scream through your speakers.

If you a fan of biker films, drama, 70s films, or Robert Redford this is a must watch film that I highly recommend.

Vamp

Ever hear the term  “ahead of its time”?  I hate that term.  Its usually used to refer to something that was a failure.  You know this really stunk but its so ahead of it time if it came out now it would be a huge hit.  Movie people say it all the time.  Vamp is often referred to that way.  But the fact is, it was not ahead of its time.  It was a great film, just an odd hybrid of horror, comedy, and soft erotica all built around Grace Jones who was getting her 15min of fame at the moment.

You see this was in the era of over the top horror films, mostly slashers that took themselves seriously.  Sure they were unintentionally funny but never played for laughs unless you count a parody like Student Body’s, and even those were nearly nonexistent.  Vamp never takes itself seriously.  It truly is a horror comedy that was promoted the wrong way.

It’s the story of a couple of guys who hook up with a rich kid with a car, played to perfection by Sixteen Candles standout Long Duck Dong.  Who was also getting his 10min of fame.  Sorry Dong, Grace had an extra few months under her run.  They head out to pick up strippers for a party and go to a seedy club where they get to witness Grace Jones perform.  To this day it is still scary to watch that.  Turns out the club is for Vampires.  One of the kids gets turned they have to fight their way out, they end up in a sewer, battle with head vampire, twist to it the end.

I’m not trivializing it, in fact I love it.  It ranks in my top 5 vampire films of all time.  Its number 3 to be honest.  It’s just really hard to go into detail because for me it’s hard to write about comedy.  When one of the kids is turned he keeps thinking of going to night school and figuring out what types of jobs her can work at during the night because he obviously can’t be in sunlight.  I mean sure there are great gore shots, amazing practical effects, nudity, and blood galore but the humor is what makes this film flow.

All the actors do an amazing job and play there parts to perfection.  Grace Jones is great in her role as the stripper vampire.  And yes if you’re thinking “This sounds familiar” it is a film that Tarentino does enjoy.  His screenplay for From Dusk Till Dawn plays homage to this film.  He will tell you that himself.

The film never really got a great release but Arrow has changed all that.  It’s pretty loaded.  Here is what you get

High Definition digital transfer
Original mono audio
Subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
One of those Nights: The Making of Vamp - a brand new documentary featuring interviews with director Richard Wenk, stars Robert Rusler, Dedee Pfeiffer, Gedde Watanabe
Behind-the-scenes rehearsals
Blooper Reel
Image gallery
Dracula Bites the Big Apple (1979) - Richard Wenk s celebrated short film
Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by the Twins of Evil

Overall this is a hell of a great film and a must have for any collection and this print is absolutely amazing.

Tenebrae

Tenebrae by Dario Argento has always been one of the few Giallo films I have actually enjoyed.  It has a great story and mystery that anyone can get behind.  Great acting and beautiful directing By Argento make this one of my favorite horror films.  Argento was actually inspired by a series of incidents which saw an insane fan telephone him to criticize him for the damaging psychological effects of his previous work. The telephone calls culminated in death threats.  Argento used this experience, plus the random violence he encountered in LA to write Tenebrae

It centers around Peter Neal an American Horror writer who goes to Italy to promote his latest book entitled Tenebrae.  As he's arriving a young woman gets her throat slashed by a black glove assailant.  This killer sends Neal a letter informing him that his novels are what is inspiring to commit murder. And boy does he, a nice handful or grizzly murders take place which is more than enough to satisfy the gore hounds reading as they are filmed quite grotesquely.  One of the best is the murder by axe.

All of these murders in question revolve around the chapters of Neal's book. Which leads to Neal and his assistant going off in search of the killer themselves.  Its through a series of events we learn that these murders are not at all what they truly appear to be.

Argento is famous for using themes in his films.  I still say that Susperia is a remake of Alice in Wonderland but what do I know.   According to James Gracey, author of a book about Argento's work, Tenebrae"explores some of his most reoccurring themes and preoccupations, such as Freudian psychology, sexual deviancy, repressed trauma, voyeurism, audience spectatorship and the fetishisation of violence and death.

Tis film received many many cuts to avoid is original NC-17 rating. Almost every gore shot had to be trimmed down actually butchered would be a better word. Sure bootlegs were around for years on the underground VHS market, or imported laserdisc for the more hardened film collectors.  Anchor Bay put out a pretty nice transfer to DVD years back but due to the color scheme Argento uses the print really didn't do the film much justice.

Now finally after all these years Synapse has released it on Blu Ray with a brand new transfer that finally does it justice.  Every single color pops just as Argento intended it to.  The Goblin soundtrack is cleaned immaculately and pumps throughout the film adding to the tension.  Plus its loaded with special features.

All-new Synapse Films supervised color correction and restoration of a 1080p scan from the original camera negative, presented in the original aspect ratio of 1.85:1
Dual English and Italian language options with newly-translated English subtitle tracks for both
Audio commentary track featuring film critic and Argento scholar, Maitland McDonagh
Rare high-definition 1080p English sequence insert shots, playable within the film via Seamless Branching
Feature-length documentary, YELLOW FEVER: THE RISE AND FALL OF THE GIALLO by High Rising Productions, chronicling the Giallo film genre from its beginnings as early 20th century crime fiction, to its later influences on the modern slasher film genre
Original UNSANE (U.S. version of TENEBRAE) end credits sequence
Alternate opening credits sequence
International theatrical trailer
Japanese SHADOW theatrical trailer

There is a limited edition 3 disc Steelbook set that includes the soundtrack as well as a collectors book.  It had a very limited run and as of this writing is not even listed on the web site.  If your able to I would suggest picking that one up.

There is a reason why this film is so well regarded in the world of not only Italian Horror but all Horror markets.  Its considered Argentos last truly great film.  If your a fan you have to buy this version as its the must see print.  If you have never seen or experienced Tenebrae then its a must purchase.

America's Deadliest Home Video

SOV horror films are getting quite the resurgence lately.  So are found footage films.  From what I can tell Americas Deadliest Home Videos is the original fount footage SOV film.  Sorry guys, I don’t really count Cannibal Holocaust as a found footage film. A true found footage film really is a Blair Witch or even better August Underground.

Well all the way back in 1993 Americas Deadliest Home Videos was released on video.  Sadly it did not take the world by storm.  In fact it did nothing.  Which is a real shame as it was light years ahead of its time.

Well fortunately for everyone with the rise of the Paranormal Activity films, which I hate by the way, found footage films started getting more and more recognition.  And Luckily Camp Motion Pictures was able to acquire the rights to this long lost classic and put out a beautiful DVD release, and even a very limited VHS Release.

Americans Deadliest Home Videos stars my man Danny Bonaduce.  Sadly it’s not the cool VH1 new and improved Danny Bonaduce, its his normal average 90’s counterpart.  He plays a shlub of a guy named Doug.  He has a cheating wife, who is actually played by Danny’s beautiful ex-wife Gretchen.  He’s a camcorder enthusiast as most of us were back in the day.  Carrying the big giant camera around recording everything in sight.  One night he discovers his wife having sex with another man and decides to take a road trip with his camera.

While driving around and filming everything he sees he stumbles across a group of men, who unbeknownst to him are the Clint Dyer  Gang.  He video tapes them destroying the latest getaway car when they notice they are being filmed.  Luckily the gang leader, Dryer doesn’t kill Doug.  He decides to have him tag along and video tape all of their criminal activities.  In fact he even has Doug participate in some of them.

This film is loaded, and I do mean loaded with over the top violence, and a fair amount of good old fashioned sleaze.  The acting is very well done.  If you have seen the trailer then yes it is meant to be humorous, but more of in an ironic dark comedy way, not a laugh out loud funny film.

I have always like Danny Bonaduce.  He was never really given the chance he deserved at being a leading man in the late 80s and early 90’s and he shines here as Doug.  If you have seen his reality show or even listen to his radio show you know he is a pretty bad ass guy.  He didn’t get that way from VH1, he always was, so watching him play a nebbish with a cheating wife really is quite a stretch for him.

As I said this is one of the first found footage films out there, possible the first and the tone and setting benefit from the gimmick perfectly.  Watching parts unfold via camcorder footage works better in this than in most any of the modern films out there.  This film really did, and still does deserve to be held in high regard in the horror community, heck it should be held in high regard by the film community in general.

This one gets one of my highest recommendations for the sheer fun it is to watch, let alone how unique and ahead of its time it was/is.  Pick this up now

Alone in the Ghost House

Ghost Hunter shows, I hate them, movies about ghost hunting, I hate them.  Paranormal films, I can take or leave them.  Found Footage films, I can also take or leave them.  It’s not that I’m a snob I just find them rather dull.  I remember when Paranormal Activity came out and everyone around me was scared and jumping and screaming.  At what?!  A lamp turning on.  Preposterous. I remember people literally drenched in fear at one point where you hear a crash and they see there chandelier has fallen.  Come one really?  And until I see a ghost come and eat someone on one of those shows I will continue to find them dull.

My wife however, who, yes I will admit wears the pants in the family is a huge fan.  That’s why I sit through them.  The other day I got the film Alone in the Ghost House.  She was right excited to watch it so we turned it on.  I must say I was pleasantly surprised.

It’s the story of Ghost hunters Lana and Derek, there not really ghost hunters in that horrible History Channel way, they actually have a pretty cool gimmick. They go to supposed haunted sites tell you what happened to make it haunted, give you the rundown on the local legends and so on.  The hook is Lana is a skeptic so she will prove there’s nothing to be scared of by staying the night in these haunted locals.  They are joined by their wisecracking cameraman and friend, and go from area to area filming these encounters.

For their next show they decide to head to “The Devils Commune”  It was an old artist commune that was the sight of a grisly mass murder.  One of the artists was convinced his girlfriend was having an affair so he killed her, and every single artist in the commune. Its basically never been touched since the murders but appears normal.  The only creepy part is the basement where the crazy artist did his work.
To spice things up for the show Derek decides to hire a medium he found on craigslist.  Ok you have to find that ironic and funny at the same time.  Anyway after performing her ritual everything starts to get creepy.  The group is separated in a typical haunted house fashion and we begin to experience strange things. And let me say we get one hell of a pay off in the end.

The film works because its set as a show being filmed.  The raw look and feel and quick cuts add to the realness of the picture.  The cast does an amazing job of showing humor, skepticism, and downright terror throughout the movie.  Special effects are minimal but the score and lighting set the mood perfectly.  And like I said the ending is great.  Probably the best ending I’ve seen to a horror film in years.  And I watch a lot of horror films.

I enjoyed the approach of our characters being skeptic and filming things for a tv show as opposed to being actually ghost hunters looking to see something that on tv shows never appears.  If you dig the ghost hunter and paranormal films this is definitely a must see.  If you a fan of horror this is definitely a must see.  Bottom line this is a must see horror film.  Check it out you will be glad you did.

Satanic

Satanic Panic, remember that.  It was all the rage in the 80s.  People blamed everything on Satan.  Movies, Heavy Metal Music, Dungeons and Dragons, everything was evil and your children were not safe.  There were books and tv shows and special news bulletins all about it on a daily basis. Geraldo Rivera even did a big prime time special all about it.  I remember the special because he used some seriously creepy Goblin style score to play behind a lot of the footage to make it seem even more horrifying.  It even became a trend in Heavy Metal Horror Films, a genre of film that died too quickly.

Recently this phenomena of panic has gained cult status, as most of these things do.  But not with the generation that went through it, but with the younger generation.  This film, Satanic deals with these people.

4 sort of friends consisting of 2 preppies and 2 goths are headed out to LA, the preppy kid wants to see the Hollywood Walk of Fame and other tourist nonsense.  The goth girl however wants to go and visit different Satanic Panic sights.  The Church of Anton Levee, The Tate house, they even stay in a hotel room that was the site of some weird ceremony where a girl committed suicide to honor Satan himself.

Things take a wrong turn when they stop at an occult store on the strip and encounter the weird devil worshiping owner.  He threatens them and makes them leave.  So what do our 4 friends do.  They go back and night and decide to follow him home.

Once there they encounter a cult performing a ritual on some young lady.  When one of the followers holds a knife to her throat they scream and run off.  The next day they are contacted by the girl from the ceremony and offer to let her stay with them for the night.

Thant’s when everything goes wrong.  After an evening of drinking, and good old fashioned Ouija board use the crazed cult girl slices her own throat in front of the others.  As this is a murder investigation the LAPD tells them they cannot leave town.  As they sit and wait weird things being to happen.  Their house is destroyed, one of the girls falls ill, dead birds line there pool.  Is it from a spirit, the cult they interrupted, a prank.  As all these things occur they are lead down a long spiral of evil.

The film work in most aspects.  The acting is good, and the plot is actually original, it even has a hell of a good pay off in the end.  I dug the lighting and camera work, but the soundtrack was horrible.  It didn’t fit the tone of the film at all.  The special effects are very well done, although this is not a gory film.  There are a few scenes but this relies more on the atmosphere and paranoia to frighten you.
The disc features a making of, interviews with the cast, behind the scenes on special effects footage, and the original trailer.

If you are into supernatural films or if you just remember the evil time in the 80’s it’s well worth checking out.
